Arriving and Departing Tauranga by Bicycle
For a cyclist, it is not easy or safe to arrive into or leave from on the Northern side. Recently the southern end has been greatly improved by the addition of a cycleway which starts at Paengaroa.

Approaching from Waihi, the northern end, there is only one way, which is via the main State Highway which carries a high volume of motorised traffic including many heavy class trucks (lorries).

Leaving Tauranga – heading South to Whakatane or Rotorua
From Papamoa, get onto Parton Road,  then left into Bell  Road. Near the end of Bell Road there is access to the new Cycle-way which will take you out to the Round about at Paengaroa.
There are cafe’s at Paengaroa (Comvita and Funky Lizard).

There is a backpackers in Young Road more info

From here you can head to Whakatane SH 2 or Rotorua SH 33.

The cycle way south by passes the town of Te Puke which is the only major town between Tauranga and Whakatane, and Tauranga and Rotorua. To get to Te Puke you will need to use the main highway SH 2
